Our History

In the early 1960s, Dr. John A. Mease proposed the idea of building an innovative retirement community in Dunedin, Florida. He envisioned a community where older adults in the Clearwater area could unburden themselves from the responsibilities of home ownership and enjoy an independent lifestyle, knowing they’d have care available should they ever need it.

More than a half-century has passed since Dr. Mease’s vision became reality — today, more than 350 people from across the country call Mease Life home. They consider our community an attractive choice because of our independent lifestyle, our location, and our not-for-profit status, which ensures our profits go back into our community, not to shareholders.

Residents are also drawn to us because they know if they ever need assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, or short-term care, it’s available to them right on our campus. People who choose our community appreciate the peace of mind in knowing one move gives them the independent lifestyle they want today, with access to the care they may need some day.
